At Tilstock CE Primary School, inclusion is not an add-on—it is the thread that runs through everything we do. Guided by our vision and values, and our commitment to Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB), we ensure that every child, regardless of background, ability, or need, is valued, supported, and empowered to shine bright and reach for the stars.
Our Vision for Inclusion
We believe that every child has the right to access high-quality education and thrive in a safe, nurturing environment. Our school values—Hope, Aspire, Respect, Nurture, Achieve, Joy—shape our inclusive culture. They remind us that inclusion is about more than removing barriers; it is about creating opportunities for every child to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.
Inclusion at Tilstock is embedded in our curriculum, teaching, and daily practice:
We set ambitious goals for every pupil, including those with SEND or who are disadvantaged. We never lower expectations based on background or perceived ability. Instead, we provide the scaffolding and support needed for success.
Our lessons are systematically structured using Rosenshine’s principles and adaptive strategies from Teach Like a Champion. This ensures that all pupils—whatever their starting point—can access and engage with learning.
Through ongoing assessment and termly Pupil Progress Meetings, we identify needs early and act swiftly. Our Pupil Intervention Toolkit ensures interventions are timely, targeted, and evidence-based, helping pupils keep up rather than catch up.
For pupils with SEND or those facing disadvantage, we provide tailored support in reading, writing, and maths, alongside social and emotional development. Interventions are planned collaboratively with teachers, support staff, and families, and monitored weekly for impact. A ‘Personalised Learning Plan’ is created collaboratively with the child, parent and staff so we can all work together to achieve.
Curriculum Access and Equity
Every child has access to a broad and balanced curriculum. We prioritise foundational skills—communication, reading, writing, and mathematics—so pupils can access wider learning and develop confidence. We take time to know and understand our children which shapes our curriculum and helps us plan meaningful experiences that we know they will enjoy and engage with.
We foster a culture where every pupil feels safe, respected, and included. Our EDIB work promotes understanding and celebration of differences, ensuring that all children feel they belong. Every Friday we have our ‘Pride & Joy’ sharing worship so that every child can share their proud work.
Pupil Job Roles: Belonging and Responsibility
We believe inclusion is strengthened when children feel they have a voice and a role in their school community. As a Church school we develop Courageous Advocates to support and champion meaningful causes and speak out against injustice. Our KS2 children take part in ‘One Voice’ within the Trust to work on issues they feel passionate about and they really make a difference to people in the community! Our pupil job roles—such as House Captains and Representatives, Eco-Warriors, Playground Buddies, Librarians, and Worship Leaders—give children meaningful responsibilities. These roles:
Inclusion is a shared responsibility. We work closely with parents and carers, recognising them as partners in their child’s learning journey. Through regular communication, workshops, and shared strategies, we empower families to support learning at home. Every adult in school—from teachers to support staff—understands each child’s uniqueness and plays an active role in their success.
We use a consistent cycle of assessment, reflection, and review to ensure inclusive practice is effective. Termly Pupil Progress Meetings, triangulated monitoring, and data analysis help us identify gaps and refine strategies. This approach ensures that inclusion is not just a principle but a measurable reality.
Our Commitment
At Tilstock CE Primary School, inclusion means every child is seen, heard, and supported to achieve their full potential. By embedding EDIB principles, high-quality teaching, and strong partnerships, we create an environment where every child can know more, remember more, and do more—and flourish as confident, resilient learners ready for the next stage of their journey.
